Part of the ‘HopeShare’ initiative in the USA Eastern Territory, which is designed to reach at–risk children with the Gospel, is the ‘SONday’SCOOL’ program. The program encourages corps officers to run their Christian education programs in innovative ways and at times other than Sunday morning.

True to the Bible, both the SonDay’Scool and PrimeTime materials are applicable and readily available for the use of other Christian denominations. The comprehensive curriculum is geared toward children’s level of understanding, helping children to better comprehend the word of God and put it into use in their daily lives.

There are many reasons—and even more excuses—for why children don’t come to Sunday School. Parents work on Sunday. Or parents don’t work on Sunday, so it’s the one day the family gets the chance to be together, or the chance to sleep in. Weekends are spent with dad, or whoever doesn’t have custody of the child. Sunday is when school sports teams practice, or when they play. For most American families Sunday isn’t the Sabbath anymore.

Still, whatever the reason why children can’t, won’t, or just don’t come on Sunday, every child needs and deserves the chance to be in Sunday School. What’s the answer? SONday’SCOOL. It’s Sunday School, but it’s not. For one thing, it’s not on Sunday. But doesn’t every day belong to the Son. And SONday’SCOOL isn’t much like school. It’s active . . . it’s alive . . . it’s COOL! It’s SONday’SCOOL!

SONday’SCOOL was developed by the Salvation Army’s USA Eastern Territory, but it can be used by any church whose members want to reach out to children with the gospel. It has all the ingredients of an evangelistic Sunday School. It doesn’t depend on prior church experience or Bible knowledge. It meets weekly for at least 45 minutes. It is centered on a solid Bible-based Christian education curriculum. It is designed to lead children into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It is designed to move children toward membership, both in the Christian education program and in the body Christ, the church.

For many children, after-school hours are the most dangerous time of the day. Between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., children are the least supervised and most likely to get into trouble. Crime rates among juveniles soar when they are let out of school. Many young people are victimized during this time period as well. Children are far more likely than adults to be victims of violent crime.

But this same time period also represents a tremendous opportunity. After-school hours are a great time for learning important life lessons. PrimeTime makes that happen. PrimeTime includes all the components you’d expect to find in any after-school program; recreation, snacks, homework help. But the distinctive feature is its spiritual component. The prime time of a child’s day, the prime time of a child’s life, is the time when that child meets God. That’s what PrimeTime is all about.

PrimeTime provides a safe environment where children receive the love and attention they need from caring adults and where they learn about God and develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
